I’m Working Out, Why are my Thighs Getting Bigger?
First of all, don’t panic and don’t stop working out.
It’s completely normal for your body to get “bigger” when you start excising. It happens to everyone.
A mistake most women make is to panic, stops working out to try and solve this problem.
The same thing happened to me.
My jeans were not fitting and I started questioning all those squats and lunges I had done.
Well, if you want to get smaller, you’ll get bigger first.
Why are My Thighs Getting Bigger?
Long story short – This is because when you start working out you don’t have much muscle mass.
As you start work out, you gain more and more muscle that will replace your fat.
To put it simply, you started working out because you want to get rid of fat. As you workout, you are building muscle.
There will be a period of time where your body has this newly formed muscle AND still has fat.
This is basically like a transition period. Hence, your thighs are a little bigger.
Now you have two options.
1. The first and often tempting option is to stop working out and go back to where you started.
2. The second option (Hint: Choose this option!) is to continue working out and eventually you will get to the point where you just have muscle and the fat will be gone, your thighs will end up being smaller than when you started working out.
Since you still have some fat from before you started working out, as you build more muscle the fat will go away and you’ll get super sexy toned legs.
The fast track to slim sexy legs
There is an important building block to fast track your way to tone your thighs and legs.
The secret is protein.
Protein is extremely important for building and maintaining lean muscle growth!
If you want to get those muscles smaller you’ll need to feed them lots of protein to get the job done.
Tip: My favorite protein shake after I workout is Field Work Nutrition I find it helps me get the protein I need and tastes great AND it is loaded with nutrients!
When I started working out my heart sank as my skinny jeans started to feel snugger.
This scared the crap out of me!
I thought that I had spent all that time and energy trying to lose weight for nothing.
I also started to blame my strength training and only do cardio.
This was a HUGE mistake.
At one point I even stopped working out altogether!
When you find your jeans feeling tighter around you thighs think of it as a good sign that you are building lean muscle.
Muscle takes more energy for your body to maintain. This means when you have muscle your body is burning more calories 24/7.
Resistance training is good for you, and your thighs!
Most women avoid weights and strength training like the plague.
At the gym, you’ll often see guys on weights and girls on cardio machines.
The biggest mistake made when trying to slim down is avoiding resistance training for the fear that you’ll “bulk up”.
I promise: You will not look like a bodybuilder if you strength train!!
What will happen is that you’ll build lean muscle which will help you burn more calories!
Read: Girls Can Lift Weighs without Bulking Up.
So you notice your thighs getting bigger, but it won’t stay this way for long!
After you start putting on a little muscle and continue to stick with your training, you’ll lose that layer of fat from your thighs!
Losing this layer of fat will reveal nice shaped muscle! Your skinny jeans will make you feel skinny again!
I can’t tell you how often I hear the following:
“I think I might,” (choose one): “stop/ease up/workout less/take a break from weight lifting/

You ARE Getting Bigger and there are a few reasons why.
Women with little to no muscle will typically increase their muscularity rather quickly after they start working out.
This is the normal amount of muscle mass you need to stay healthy, you won’t end up looking like a
“According to Zatsiorsky and Kreamer in Science and Practice of Strength Training, women need to train with heavy weights not only to strengthen the muscles but also to cause positive adaptations in the bones and connective tissues.” –via www.crossfittt.com
The problem is that women get quickly scared.
When they start lifting weights and strength training because they quickly build muscle before they start to lose the fat surrounding the muscle.
When this
I know a lot of women who have stopped working out because they think they’re getting bigger.
The reality is this: it’s REALLY hard for women to get big and bulky without doing hormonal treatments. Women who lift get smaller.
If you notice your thighs getting bigger this is a sign that your body is in a state of transition.
You might even notice the number on the scale going up.
Women will gain weight after they start training their muscles.
This is GOOD.
What happens next is that your new muscle will start helping you burn even more fat.
It not uncommon to gain 10 pounds of muscle and then go on to lose 30 pounds of fat.
The key is to give your body enough time to adjust.
STICK WITH IT
Don’t give up on yourself.
You are not giving your body enough time to transition.
If you continue to be consistent with your efforts you will see this reversed and you’ll notice your body getting smaller and getting rid of fat.
If you want a smaller, stronger, and toned-looking body then don’t give up!
Add strength and resistance training to your workout.

So relax, and continue to put in that work.

I’m so glad I came across this. I’ve been strength training for quite awhile now and was totally disheartened when I tried on a pair of pants and they were to tight even though they were fine a few months ago. Now I know what’s going on with my thighs and to keep doing what I’ve been doing.
omg thank you so much for writing this article I have been doing a bootcamp for months and lately i have been feeling thick now I know thanks your the best you really know your stuff.I’m feeling so motivated!
You’re welcome, glad I could help out!
Omg THANK YOU FOR THIS ARTICLE! I have been walking at least 5 days a week since last May, I seem to have gained a lil weight. My jeans are tighter after 5 months. 🙁 I feel fatter, even though my face is thinner and my arms. My butt is bigger my husband loves it. I just been feeling like cutting back or like all this work for nothing. I do feel stronger through my legs and core. I recently added planking to my routine. I won’t give up now since I read this. I found new determination. Thank you for your info and inspiring words.
Holy bananas I literally was just talking about this I was wondering why my thighs were getting bigger & I wanted to stop the tredmill NOPE not anymore Yay thank you for pushing me not to
Hi, I’m exactly in this situation right now! I desperately want to believe that this is going to happen but it’s been already 3 months and my thighs are just getting bigger…the jeans I used until 3 months ago don’t fit anymore, cellulite is more visible and I’m so sad and frustrated. I don’t want to quit because I gained strength and I don’t want my efforts to go wasted but this really affects my mood and my self confidence…I started working out because I wanted to get slimmer but the opposite’s happening!!!(Sorry for venting )
Just keep going with it, don’t give up on yourself!
I’m exactly like you!!!! I’ve also gone up a dress size and nothing fits!! I always quit when this happens and i end up being skinny fat. I’m pushing through. I’m so relieved I’m not alone!
I have been doing strength training for the past several months and have experienced the same thing. My butt, thighs, and hips are getting bigger. However, I am gaining quite a bit of muscle and have noticed that my hormones have started to level out. I feel quite a lot better. However I feel that I am still carrying some extra fat over the muscles. I have decided to do a low carb diet for now and continue the weight training. I really feel that this will accelerate the fat loss for me and let the muscles shine through! (anyway, that is what I am hoping for, ha.)
Wow this is awesome! I’ve been doing kickboxing since late January, before that I was never working out regularly, ever. I noticed none of my pants were fitting around April and I am still struggling to find things that fit me! I’ve always been a size 2 at most so I’m majorly freaking out. Since I’m in my 8th month of working out consistently when do you think I’ll pass the hump? Do I need to be working out even harder to get past it? Thank you so much for this info it’s so helpful!
The time frame for this is different for everyone. It will depend on the type of workouts you do, how often you workout, your diet, and your genetics. If you are working out 5 days a week with a variety of workout (mix of cardio, resistance training, and HIIT) and you are eating a healthy diet you should start to see a slimmer figure begin to appear after 3 months. But like I said, it varies from person to person. While working out is important, its also important that you have a healthy diet. Many “health food” are advertised as healthy but are high in sugar. I always recommend that following a Paleo Diet is the best way to ensure you are getting nutritious food that is 100% good for your body.
I started working out a week and a half ago and nothing fits me I had a thigh gap before – now its gone , someone asked me If i was expecting . sometimes i wonder if it was even worth it for me to get back into fitness … This is so disheartening but after reading this post im gona persevere and hopefully i will see the benefits soon. Im also unable to stay asleep for more than 3-4 hrs at night. I know that ur metabolism starts going into overdrive but mine seems to be keeping me awake. i dont know what to do im going outta my mind – and it makes me void of energy for my workouts. Im really hating this right now… Life seemed better before i started exercising… i survived a domestic assault and so to boost
my self Esteem i decided to hit the gym. But its doing just the opposite. Help. Please.
What type of workouts are you doing and what is your diet like? Working out shouldn’t be effecting you sleep like that, in fact it should be doing the opposite and helping you sleep better. I would consult your doctor with this issue.
This article was really want I needed! I look great and have been training for about 4 weeks, but I got on the scale at the doctor’s and was 10 lbs. heavier than usual. It’s been hard to convince myself to stick with it, but this article was really helpful!
Just remember that muscle weighs more than fat. Don’t focus too much on the number you see on the scale. A better measure would be to take a look at your BMI. Even though you might “weigh” more, that weight is muscle now instead of fat! Keep up the great work and stick to it!
Ugh!! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this post. I was almost in tears this morning when the zipper of my go to pants popped. Thank you so much! I am at the 6 week mark, so cheers to the rest of my hustle and journey! LMAO
Awesome! Keep it up!
I’ve been doing bootcamp since Jan 4-5 times a week so lifting weights, HIIT, resistance training etc but my thighs, belly, arms etc everything is bigger I’m getting really upset as my clothes don’t fit any more and there so uncomfortable. Why is this
I’m also eating healthier
Whats your diet like? Many foods that are advertised as being healthy are actually packed with sugar. The best way to guarantee that you are eating the right foods is by following The Paleo Diet, this will eliminate all processed foods from your diet. If you are new to the Paleo Diet I would recommend signing up for The Paleo Plan. It will guide you through the whole diet as well as provide you with recipes and shopping lists!
I am so thankful for this article. I’m not in a good place right now, as I’m giving it all I have in the gym and staying to my meal plan, but I feel huge. My skinny jeans make me look fat – and I was about to leave everything – figured my body is maybe just not meant to be lean vascular and fit. I’m taking your word for this…. I’m going to continue, not get on the scale, not try on my skinny’s and keeping to my meal and training plan.
Thanks again
Kind Regards

I recently started working out, n getting bigger on my thighs and arms. When can I expect to see change to opposite side? Losing weight n slimmer ?

The last few days I noticed I have been gaining wait and my thighs are much bigger. I have been being so disciplined too for the last month. It’s very disappointing to not know what to wear for clothes especially when I have gained weight as it is with aging :(before I started exercising again. Thank you for the encouragement to keep going 🙂
I have been working so hard for 6 months now. I am heavier now than when I started. I have thigh , belly and chin fat I did not have before. I do not know what I am doing wrong. I was only doing long distance cardio before and for the past 6 months I have added a multitude of variety workouts. Some days I even do morning and afternoon sessions. I am so careful about everything I put in my mouth. I am so frustrated. Actually, I am at a point where I am angry. Why? Why am I not changing. What sm I doing wrong!? Ugh!

I added to my zumba routine a boot camp style work out since january. And my last year shorts dont fit!! So 5 months on and stil no sign of getting leaner!! Im so close to give it up
Thank you so much for this. I’ve been going to the gym 6 days a week since February and give 100% to every session and feel bigger right now-I can see more definition in my arms/stomach and legs but my clothes feel tighter and the scales gave go be up! I’ll carry on……
Thank you for posting. I have been really worried about this and if I made the right decision to join crossfit because my body was changing and expanding. That wasn’t my goal. I think I may also need more protein. I need to figure this all out. But I have only been going for 5 weeks now.
Protein is essential for developing lean muscle and losing fat. Be sure to read my post on my favorite meal replacement/ protein shake: Slender Blend Protein.
Omg! Thank god I came across this! I have over 1 year lost 100 pounds,, but now I notice my jeans are real tight in the thighs, I was just sitting here crying wondering what I am doing wrong! I have been working out for 4 years now, gym 5 days a week 2 with a trainer, I do weights and cardio…. this makes me feel so much better! Thanks
Thank you so much. I was searching for answers to why my legs and butt are bigger after I’ve been working out for a month and none of my pants fit. I’ve felt so disheartened and was convinced I should stop. Thanks for setting me straight
This has been so helpful! Had a big meltdown because I don’t feel comfortable in my skinny jeans…. How long does this stage take to pass?

OMG thank you. I was concerned. My legs are larger and my slacks were snug 2. You put my mind at rest and gave me motivation to continue!!!! Great news.
I too am the same 6 weeks at the gym 3/4 times a week & I feel that I am getting bigger everywhere especially my bum, legs & thighs my pants are all tight on me it is very disheartening. After reading this I will carry on – thank you
thanks so much am relieved. i started an execrcise regime in 2015. i got bigger i had tio stopped, 2017 i started 1 hour brisk walking – 6,000 steps five times a week in my work out programe. i was happy because i felt very strong and hoping to change my dress to size 12 by December. to my greatest suprise my cloths became tight , i was wondering why am i growing bigger and not smaller. i told my self that execise might not be the best for me it might be intermitent fasting. i change my thinking when i decided to seek knowledge. this article explained in detail what i am experiencing . tanks so much.
my question is i want to loose considerable amount of weight for 3 months before starting resistant excercise will that be ok ?
Yes, keep working out and remember that exercise is only 20% of weight loss, the other 80% will be determined by your diet. If you are looking into intermittent fasting I would strongly recommend The Keto Beginning ebook and guide.
What’s a normal amount of time to get to the other side of the transition? It sounds like I’m in the muscle building stage and I don’t want to give up. I see more tone but the size of my thighs and butt have increased and my pants aren’t fitting and it’s very frustrating.
At least 8 weeks but in some cases, it can take up to 4 months to really see a huge difference. Newly strengthened muscle will swell and store water. Just keep it up and don’t give up, if you do you will just get back to where you started. Remember that Fat takes longer to a lot longer to get rid of than muscle. You can do it!
Thank you so much for this post! I am currently facing the same issue and was questioning everything…I will keep going!
You’re so welcome! Yes – I know that feeling! You’ve got this, just keep it up!
I cannot tell you how much I needed to read this. Thank you for the extra encouragement to keep going.
Awesome! Yes – just keep going and be consistent with your workouts! You’ll see the results you’re looking for in no time!
Thanks! I am experiencing this now. I tried on some slacks, and they were snug on the thighs. It was an unpleasant surprise!
You’re welcome! Just keep on working out and you’ll notice you’re thighs getting smaller!
hello thanks for sharing this information
Absolutely! 🙂
